While the results can be awe-inspiring, there’s a common issue that plagues many VFX studios – they often find themselves burning through budgets faster than a dragon’s breath. In this blog post, i’ll try to explore & share the reasons behind this financial combustion and how studios can manage their resources more effectively.
There are many reasons why VFX Studios burn money or make loss, let’s try to understand the top 3 reasons why VFX studios burn money
—————
Overview:
Visual effects are an integral part of modern filmmaking, enhancing storytelling and creating unforgettable cinematic experiences. However, the complexities of VFX work can sometimes lead to unexpected budget overruns. Specially to those Production houses who has a their own VFX Facilities & they think that everything can be managed in our inhouse VFX Studio,
well i would say that’s technically true & it’s also possible,
as they say here in INDIA
“ Post mein dekh lenge”
fact is that we have great artist here in India & everything can be managed but it comes with Extra Spend / EXPENCES. you have to spend on Extra Artist , Heads , Machines, Rents, Electricity & many more ancillary things connected to business of VFX Studio.
Key Concepts:
To understand why VFX studios tend to overspend, it’s crucial to grasp some key concepts:
-
Technological Advancements:
VFX technology is ever-evolving, with new software and hardware constantly emerging. Keeping up with the latest tools and techniques can be costly.
-
Talent Costs:
Experienced supervisors, Good team Leads, Skilled VFX artists,, and technicians demand competitive salaries, which can strain a studio’s budget.
-
Project Scope:
Experienced VFX Producers is the key factors in achieving things in budget, track the Project succes & making sure we are on track, if a project is not aligning to the scope of a project or adding a lot of last-minute changes can lead to increased costs.

Tips and Best Practices:
To prevent burning money, VFX studios can implement the following strategies:
————–
- Thorough Pre-Production: when you are taking up VFX Projects – Careful planning and concept development can help studios avoid costly changes down the road. As they will be dealing with the creative expectations of Director, which needs to be discussed well in advance with production & then budgets need to be in place.
- But if you have your own Production House + Own VFX Studios it’s very easy to cross this thin line of creative expectations, when things are planned at Pre-Production meetings and need to be executed at post production stage, being inhouse VFX facility they would tend to loose this line of alterations.
as they feel that everything is inhouse & don’t count manday’s, to avoid this VFX facilities need to align with the production team & vice versa.
Team Allocation:-
after setting up & understanding expectations at pre-production level, its VFX Facilities / VFX Producers responsibility to make sure to align & track all the resources as per requirements of project, you can not cut corner by employing low skilled staff & Expect wonders from them
Employing & investing in the right team will save a lot of Money , changes / alterations & in turn your Man hours, because you achieve things fast, else you just waste your time.
Timelines & buffer:-
Many times I have experienced specially in indian senario TVCs, Bollywood films & web series, unexpected timelines are set in front of Studios / VFX Producers & when such projects are taken up by the VFX studios, 99% studios fail because those complex sequences / shots are executed by non skilled talents.
Or
sometimes they are achived in tight deadlines doing day & night by same team/artist, without breaks, after few projects/ month of following similar pattern, artist feel missing culture / passion & they start cribbing.
- Technology Assessment: Continuously evaluate the necessity of adopting the latest technology, considering its impact on the project’s bottom line.
- Budget Buffer: Allocate a buffer in the budget for unexpected expenses to minimize financial surprises. This is an important aspect which comes under the vision of a VFX Producer, if he is not able to estimate the budget & convince the Topline, the whole pressure comes on the execution team & they are forced to work extra hours without getting paid.
Well consider this as business advice that makes sure you ask for timely payments of VFX Studio as per agreed terms.
Challenges and Solutions:
Challenges that VFX studios face include the unpredictability of creative demands, tight deadlines, and managing talent effectively. Solutions involve setting clear expectations, adhering to a well-defined production schedule, and fostering effective communication between client, team members & setting up right TEAM structure. Payments etc.
